# trove config

> Load this page when: you need to show, read or change a Trove setting from the terminal

## For agents

- Run trove config show --json to read every setting.
- Change a setting with trove config set. Only skill.planMode and skill.citationBlock exist.
- A change applies the next time an agent session starts.

Settings are stored in your account, so they follow you to every machine. The same switches are in Settings on the web.

## Settings

| Key | Values | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `skill.planMode` | always, smart, ask or off | always | When the agent consults your library while it plans. See [Plan mode and auto mode](https://docs.heytrove.ai/concepts/plan-and-auto-mode.md). |
| `skill.citationBlock` | on or off | on | Whether the agent adds a citation block to answers. See [Citations](https://docs.heytrove.ai/concepts/citations.md). |

## trove config show

Shows the effective value of every setting, with defaults filled in.

**Usage**

```bash
trove config show [--json]
```

**Example**

trove config show --json
```

## trove config get

Prints one value. Text output only.

**Usage**

```bash
trove config get KEY
```

**Example**

```bash
trove config get skill.planMode
```

**Output**

```terminal
always
```

**Errors**

| Message | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| `Unsupported config key '{key}'. Supported keys: …` | Use `skill.planMode` or `skill.citationBlock`. |

## trove config set

Changes one value. Text output only.

**Usage**

```bash
trove config set KEY VALUE
```

**Arguments and flags**

| Argument | Value | Default | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `KEY` | `skill.planMode` or `skill.citationBlock` | required | Setting to change. |
| `VALUE` | see Settings above | required | New value. |

**Example**

trove config set skill.planMode smart
```

**Output**

✓ Set skill.planMode = smart
Applies the next time you start an agent session.

**Errors**

| Message | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| `Invalid value '{value}' for {key}. Must be one of: {list}.` | Use a value from the Settings table. |
